An algorithm is a logical process for solving a problem. Algorithms underpin many of the everyday tasks that the modern world takes for granted. While most of the time they are employed for finding information on the internet, enhancing the appearance of a photograph, decoding a television signal, or even sending email, they can also be used for abstract purposes. Artists such as Sol LeWitt and John Cage used sets of rules—simple algorithms—as a means of generating visual art or music without direct control over every gesture or tone. In a similar spirit, my work uses artist-written algorithms to generate forms between biomorphic and geometric abstraction that serve as a basis for paintings, sculptures and videos. The resulting shapes have an ambiguous scale, able to be read as enlargements of the microscopic realm or as architectural studies. |
